We finally bit the bullet and got a new printer - the old hp deskjet 3220 just would not die, so we donated it to a school. We switched because we wanted better photo printing and speed, and the scanner was USB 1.1 only.

I'm a Mac person, but more and more HP products are truly impressive. The laptop I most recently set up was the simplest ever. This unit was more of that simplicity. Just unpacking it was comparable to the Apple experience. One booklet, and the packaging was two pieces of foam and a tote bag instead of plastic wrapping, cords and ink were in a zippered reusable pouch. Both were of the same material used for reusable grocery bags. Minimal waste. Suggest they move from styro to compressed paper like others.

Setup was done without so much as a USB cable. All was done by loading the software, first into the Mac, then later into the HP. Power up the printer, tell it to find your WiFi router and it appears as a Bonjour (zeroconf) item. No issues with Mac or Win setup. Alignment is done by printing and then scanning an alignment page. No more squinting to discern the most-lined-up raster.

Printing is darn good on plain paper and knockout on photo paper. A 4x6 guide on the tray is convenient. There is an extended paper support that I don't even see using.

Scanning was the big question. I've used Ed Hamrick's VueScan for years, it's a wonderful tool. It warned that I'd need to install HP drivers in order to use VueScan, which would contribute to bloat. Since we sent off the USB cables with the printer and scanner, VueScan didn't see the cable-less WiFi scanner when it booted. I figured we were stuck. Well, we weren't - as there is a web interface to the scanner that can scan jpg or PDF at up to 600 dpi from a browser.

Printing and scanning over WiFI is wonderful, much improved over similar devices from just a few years ago.
ePrint gives you an email address that lets you print common document formats via email attachments.
The web interface lets you double check remote print jobs.

I was given this printer in 2006 when my dad upgraded to a PhotoSmart C6180. He used it mostly for mixed printing, photos and documents. This replaced a DeskJet 980. The 8150 was used at home for schoolwork, documents, and some photos. I found it a wonderfully capable machine and enjoyed direct printing via PictBridge and through the media card reader.

I took it to work for a large printing project. The 8150 drank 12 black cartridges and 32 color cartridges as it churned out hundreds of full-bleed, duplex pages. It was racing 3 OfficeJet 7680s and a tight deadline. It did fairly well, but the stress of the deadline and a couple of technical glitches were really too much to handle.

My only complaint when using the 8150: sometimes it would grab two or more pages at a time. This was bad when doing duplex proofs or printing checks. The only solution was to print a page at a time and manually feed it the correct pages. Not so fun for unattended print jobs. I never had a paper jam, but sometimes if the paper input was too full it wouldn't pick up paper at all. No complaint with that, I just pull some paper out and it works.

I used the printer at home with an HP desktop PC and shared it to laptops through the home wireless network. It worked well, but I wanted to get rid of the desktop and needed a way to connect it. I added an HP BT500 Bluetooth adapter to it last summer. HP TotalCare recommended I use the out of production BT300, but the only one I could find was 0. The BT500 worked perfectly for months and was less than . Printing an image from a cell phone was amazing, and finally getting the .

Then the printer started crashing. The LCD would display a green screen with a power button icon and the code: 880B7418. HP TotalCare blamed the BT500, which I removed and made the printer happy again. For a few weeks we were back to printing with a direct USB connection. Now the 8150 is wireless again, connecting through a NetGear ReadyNAS/print server.

All was well until last month when it crashed again when printing from an SD card. Total Care said the printer has faulty hardware and should be retired. As long as I use the printer without any front panel connections (USB/PictBridge or card reader), it is fine.

I think it is a great printer, but beware if you are looking for a deal on a used one. Print a test image from a flash card, or plug in a USB Bluetooth adapter to see if you get a crash.

The longevity of this product is sad, I still have a DeskJet 895cse that works like new. I'm looking forward to a new AIO from HP and hope it lasts longer than the 8150 did.

Super easy to install...even running vista 64 bit (a 2 minute download from the HP site)...installed on other machines with no problems, just plug and play.

Very easy to use, both my nephew (5) and my mother in law (77) had no problem using this...and using all the photo add-ons, like the draw function, the frames and the clip art.

Photo quality is pretty good. Colors are very saturated, but black is not true black, but so close you won't notice unless you try. Occationally skin tones have gone very orange. I'm not sure if it's a function of the printer, the cameras or the computer....seems if you have some true white in the feild, and not much orange everything is fine.

Speed...well, in practice a 4x6 takes about a minute and a half....a few have taken a bit longer. I have not had the chance to print any 5x7 or 4x12's yet.

Ink useage isn't horrible, but the "valu pack" that HP sells with one cartrage and 144 sheets of paper...well, it might say the cartrage is formulated to print all 144 (or at least suggest that) it only prints about 50 4x6's....I've seen a few store brand cartrages that say they will fit this printer...havent' tried them yet, but at about half the price of the HP cartrage, it's worth a shot.
